Firm History & Tradition

Founded in 1981

The original firm of L'Abbate & Balkan was formed in October 1981 by Donald R. L'Abbate and Kenneth J. Balkan to provide high quality legal services economically and efficiently to those in the professional liability field.

Drawing on the extensive experience of its founders in insurance law and in the defense of professional liability litigation, the firm began offering services to individual professionals and their insurers on a local and national basis.

The Firm's early clients quickly discovered that these were lawyers knowledgeable about the professions they were servicing and that they understood clients' problems.

The clients appreciated the hard work, dedication and excellent results that the Firm consistently achieved. By the mid 1980's, the Firm had grown significantly and had established itself as a prominent insurance defense law firm with a particular emphasis in professional liability litigation.

A Tradition of Hard Work, Dedication and Excellence

Throughout the 1980's, the Firm grew steadily and expanded its Professional Liability Practice Groups as it began representing more and different professionals.

To meet the needs of its growing list of insurance company clients, the Firm established its Insurance Industry Practice Group.

Although the Firm grew dramatically during this time, it held fast to its traditions of hard work, dedication to client needs and professional excellence.

Growing To Help Clients Meet New Challenges

As the Firm continued to grow, it increased both the scope of its services and its servicing capabilities. In January 1989, L'Abbate & Balkan opened its first branch office, adding yet another facet to its growing practice.

At the same time, the New York office established the Products and Industrial Liability Practice Group to help its clients deal with new and emerging legal challenges.

In 1990, L'Abbate & Balkan, by then a well established leader in the legal community, undertook to diversify its practice through the addition of lawyers experienced in the business and real estate fields.

With the establishment of the Firm's Business Planning & Transactions and Real Estate Transactions Practice Groups, the Firm again expanded its servicing capabilities when it acquired banks and other financial institutions as new clients and offered representation in business and real estate matters.

Economy and Efficiency - Helping Clients
Meet Their Bottom Line

In the turbulent economic times of the early 1990's, the Firm helped its clients to survive by avoiding many of the legal pitfalls that beset so many professional practices and businesses.

The Firm took a practical approach to solving problems while balancing legal costs against the need for new ideas and solutions.

In 1995, the Firm name was expanded to L'Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. in recognition of the contributions of partners Anthony P. Colavita and Peter L. Contini, both of whom have been associated with the Firm from the early 1980's.

Meeting New Challenges with New Skills

In 1997, recognizing that its clients were facing new legal challenges in the workplace, the Firm expanded its Labor and Employment Practice Group.

As with all of the Firm's Practice Groups, the Labor and Employment Practice Group not only provides complete litigation services to clients in labor and employment matters, but also offers services such as risk management counseling and training geared to avoiding litigation.

Expanding to Meet Clients' Needs

In 2006, L'Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. enhanced its ability to service its clients when it moved into its new 39,000 square foot office at the newly redesigned 1001 Franklin Avenue in Garden City, New York; Long Island's first "green," or environmentally engineered, commercial building.

In 2013, the Firm notably increased its capabilities in New Jersey with the expansion and relocation of its offices to East Hanover. The traditions of excellence and dedication to its clients that were already so well established in New York continue in New Jersey.

These expansions enable the Firm to offer additional services to many of its existing clients, as well as new clients.
